Hi, I’m Anthony. I design honest, functional spaces for homeowners and independent businesses.

The Crew – Anthony James Ries, AIA

For over 20 years, I have been fortunate to design spaces where people live, work, and connect. I believe that good architecture doesn’t need to be loud or complicated to be meaningful—whether it is a family home or a neighborhood business. Instead, I focus on the quiet details that elevate daily life: how the morning light enters a room, a cleanly framed view, or the honest texture of a well-chosen material.

My path as an architect has taught me that the best work comes from close, personal collaboration. I started my own firm in 2008, spent several years working with a partner, and have recently chosen to return to a solo practice. I intentionally keep my business small because I genuinely enjoy being the person who answers your calls, sketches your ideas, and guides you through the process from start to finish.

To me, the true measure of a successful project isn’t its size, budget, or sector, but how well it serves the people inside it. Whether we are working on a small kitchen renovation, a custom legacy estate, a retail storefront, or a community workspace, my goal remains the same: to create a beautiful, functional, and honest backdrop for your life and work.

I also know exactly what you are going through because I’ve been in your shoes. When I built my own family home, I stepped away from the drafting table and acted as the general contractor. I managed the budgets, dealt with complex permitting, and spent long days on-site working with subcontractors.

That experience fundamentally changed how I practice architecture for both homeowners and business clients. It taught me humility and gave me a deep respect for the reality of building costs and construction timelines. When I draw a line on paper for your project, I don’t just think about how pretty it will look—I think about the actual time, money, and effort it takes to bring it to life.

The Philosophy – Experiential

I believe true design is about creating a quiet, lasting backdrop for life, whether I am designing a private residence or a neighborhood business. To achieve this, I treat light as a building material in its own right, designing spaces that follow the natural rhythm of the day. It is about welcoming the soft morning light where you drink your coffee or where your team starts their workday, and capturing the warm afternoon glow where you unwind or where customers gather.

Because architecture is experienced in motion, I think deeply about the daily journey and how people actually move through a building. I look at the transition from the busy outside world to a calm interior, the sightlines that open up as you walk around a corner, and how a space unfolds naturally. In a home, this movement creates comfort and ease; in a commercial space, it intuitively guides a customer’s journey and improves workflow.

Bringing this all together is the honesty of the materials themselves. I am drawn to elements that have weight, texture, and longevity. The tactile feel of a smooth wooden handrail, the texture of a stone wall, or the grain of a floor are the details that bring a building to life, making it feel grounded, welcoming, and real.

There is a quiet joy that comes from living or working in a space that just works, removing the friction from your day so that layouts adapt easily to your changing needs. For businesses, this translates into a more productive environment for employees and an inviting atmosphere that keeps customers coming back. This brings an immediate sense of well-being, but it also carries a practical financial benefit. By prioritizing durable materials and smart layouts, a well-planned building retains its value and reduces long-term maintenance headaches. Ultimately, thoughtful architecture is simply good business, and my goal is to give you a space that is as financially sensible as it is a joy to experience every single day.

Comprehensive Design Services

I keep my practice personal, but my reach is comprehensive. By working as a solo practitioner, I act as your single point of contact while assembling and managing the exact team of specialized professionals your project requires.

Residential Services

When we design a home, we look at the project as a complete, cohesive whole. My residential services include both architectural design and interior design, ensuring that the exterior form and the interior details talk to one another seamlessly. To bring the technical side of the project to life, I partner with trusted outside consultants for structural and civil engineering. I handle the coordination and management of these engineers entirely, so you can enjoy the creative process without worrying about managing multiple teams.

Commercial Services

For business clients, I deliver everything needed to take your vision from an initial concept all the way to a building permit. I assemble and lead a full, integrated team of consultants tailored to your project. This includes architectural and interior design, alongside civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering. By coordinating the entire engineering team under one umbrella, I streamline the complex commercial permitting process, protecting your timeline and ensuring your business asset is built beautifully and efficiently.

Moving from Paper to Reality

A great design is only as good as its execution, which is why having the right builder is essential. Over my twenty years in the industry, I have built strong, reliable relationships with a network of trusted general contractors who share a commitment to quality craftsmanship and honest communication. I am happy to introduce you at any point in our process.
